The Source Of Strength
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” -Joshua 1:9
Do not be afraid. These four words are famously echoed throughout scripture 365 times (depending on the translation). We can hear this command from God so many times that we forget why. Why should we not be afraid? Why can we be strong and courageous? Why do we have no need for discouragement? Does our lack of fear come from an abundance of good circumstances? Does it come from the earthly relationships that we cling to as a security blanket? Do we draw our courage from our talent, money, connections, or status?
Why can we as christians walk with incredible courage and not be afraid? The reason is nothing more and nothing less than the promise that God is with us wherever we go. It isn’t because every situation we walk into is going to magically get better, but because God is going to be with us even when it doesn’t. It’s not that earthly community cannot provide support, but it is only God’s perfect love that can cast out fear. He is the source of true courage. He is the giver of true strength.
PRAYER: Father God, I thank you that you are always with me, and that because of your presence, I no longer have to walk in fear. I pray that you would help me to obey your command today and not allow fear or discouragement to drive me, but that I would be drawn by your love wherever it is you have for me to go. And above all, I pray that I would always remember that you are with me.
